Should Pregnant Women See a Chiropractor?

In honor of (the recent) Labor Day weekend, we’re devoting this post to the benefits of seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy (naturally). Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, holistic way to take care of your joints, especially your spine—a literal pillar of strength for your body as significant changes (like the growth of a baby) unfold in a short time. During pregnancy, protecting your back and pelvis without surgery or medication is key to a healthy, stress-free and pain-free nine months. In fact, the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association now recommends chiropractic care throughout pregnancy. Here are the benefits:

Balancing act. A woman’s body prepares and adjusts for pregnancy through an increased back curve, protruding abdomen, and pelvic changes—all of which can throw off balance, creating the first maternal sacrifice (before the kid even asks to borrow your car). Chiropractic care re-establishes pelvic balance and joint alignment, taking a load off the uterus and ligaments and restoring balance and order…at least until the first diaper change.

Stress relief. Regular adjustments to the spine are key to reducing the pressure of weight gain that occurs with pregnancy. Entrusting a chiropractor to your prenatal care can also prevent sciatica, so you remain healthy and active. Healthier pregnancies translate to healthier babies.

Inner strength. Hormonal changes can soften joints, adding stressors and strains to daily life while pregnant—and perhaps carrying other little ones, to boot. By restoring alignment and strength, a chiropractor can provide relief for back, leg, and pelvic aches.

Safer labor. A pelvis that’s misaligned may constrict the room needed for the baby to assume the preferred position for birth. That means, when “labor day” arrives, the baby might be in breech or posterior position, increasing the chance of C-section. By promoting a safer position for the baby, chiropractic care can reduce the risk of worry and crisis for expectant mothers.

All chiropractors are trained to practice on women who are pregnant. At Natural Health Chiropractic & Acupuncture, we use various methods to ease the stresses of pregnancy such as the Webster technique designed to help women with a potential breech baby. Our providers can also suggest stretches and exercises to complement your personal treatment plan. If you’re anticipating a personal “Labor Day” in the next few months, we’re eager to help you find your inner strength.

Natural Health Chiropractic & Acupuncture serves the residents of Rochester, New York and the surrounding areas. Our location in Gates is conveniently located just off I-390 with easy access and plentiful parking. Easy to get to from Greece, Spencerport, Chili, and Henrietta.
