OM Chanting: Shine and Share the Light

OM Chanting: Shine and Share the Light

Have you ever attended a yoga class and been told to chant an “OM”? The extended vibration on everyone’s lips gathers force as the seconds tick by, swelling into an almost mystical chorus of power that seems to penetrate deeply into the body and mind. How does it work, what is the significance of the sound, and how can it help promote healing, peace, and clarity—not just inwardly, but for humanity as a whole?

In a famous experiment on its impact upon water, a Japanese scientist separated water into one hundred petri dishes, assigning some a “good” fate and others a “bad” fate. The good water was showered (pardon the pun) with praise. The bad water was mocked and scolded. Each petri dish was then frozen. When viewed under a microscope, the “praised” water had arranged itself into beautiful crystal structures. The bad water had become asymmetric and jagged. A similar concept holds true for the positive energy contained in the OM.

Experts on the OM call it “the highest and purest vibration” and “the primordial sound, the source of all other sounds, and the source of all creation.” Tuning into the OM vibration helps dispel the lower, more negative frequencies.

There are OM chanting meditations on YouTube that you can do at home as part of a meditation practice; but the OM’s real power to heal lies in the collective sound, especially when chanters are arranged in a circle. OM chanting groups, several of which exist in Rochester, are led by certified organizers committed to spreading the power and potential of the OM. In fact, the Cities of Light initiative on OMChanting.org aims to spread OM chanting to all major cities worldwide, bringing light and healing to even the most crowded and polluted spaces.

Those who have participated in OM chanting circle report a release in emotions, thoughts, and negative energy along with positive shifts in emotional, mental, and physical states. You can chant the OM out loud or silently, alone or with friends, or for a minute or hour. Those who do are said to spread positive energy and become “light bearers” of humanity.

And remember: the light starts within. As the saying goes, “you cannot pour from an empty cup.” Kindle your positive energy and cultivate your own well-being at Natural Health Chiropractic and Acupuncture where we support you in body, mind, and spirit.
